WP 3.0, ATA 3.5.3

When calling non exixting page on the site I got the list of excerpts instead of the content for 404 Page as configured in ATO -> Style & edit CENTER COLUMN

You may see it here: http://www.piotrcelinski.info/blahblah (blahblah page do not exist)

I hoped the update to 3.5.3 will solve the problem. It did not, however.

Have you tried disabling plugins to see if one of them is the culprit. The 404 page works fine for me with WP3 and Ata 3.5.3.

It seems it was not caused by any plugin. Am I the only one with this issue?

I have not heard of this problem do you have the default code in the "Content if NOT FOUND" box as shown below? Is there any other code you have changed?

The Polish strings come from translation files I prepared for the theme.

I changed the content for 404 to:

<p>Niedawno została zmieniona struktura serwisu. But there was no change. I wonder if it is the WP 3.0 issue. With 2.x the 404 page was OK. I tred also default Twenty Ten theme. There was mo problem with 404.

Do you have anything set in your htaccess file to deal with 404's?

There is a big .htaccess file created by W3 Total Cache (as below). However, one of my first steps was to switch the W3TC plugin off (I repeated it with any plugin that might affect my site).

The result was always the same. Odd 404 page instead of configured one.

Yes I did. Is it the cause? How to stay with new permalink structure and proper 404 page?

Try swapping back to the default permalinks, then back to what you have defined

Sorry, no results as expected. I found another strange behaviour. My permalinks are defined in this way: /teksty/%postname%/. When going to the url: http://www.piotrcelinski.info/teksty/non-existing-post I got the 404 page as defined in ATO. In all other cases I gor the page with excerpts.

I also changed the structure of my permalink into /blog/%postname%/

Any idea of what can be done?

I have just installed WP Security Scan and it says that "The file .htaccess does not exist in wp-admin/.". i don't know if this sheds some light on the problem... i have no idea of why .htaccess is not there.

I do not think this is the problem with .htaccess file. Neither any plugin is a cause in my case. I did some experiments with my .htacces and plugins and I am almost sure the problem is somewhere else. I did not find the solution and replayed the issue here: http://forum.bytesforall.com/showthread.php?t=9128.

I'm having the same problem with my install. I changed the theme to Twenty Ten 1.1 (wordpress built in) and the 404 page displayed properly but when i changed back to Atahualpa the 404 page had the proper title "404 - Page Not Found %sitename%" but the content was a page of excerpt posts.

How are your permalink settings including category base if you have one?

I changed my permalink to default and i got an ugly 404 page :

Not Found
The requested URL /fakepage was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The permalink structure is /blog/%postname%

Just tested on another domain with Atahualpa 3.5.1 also using the permalink of
/blog/%postname%

no category base or tag base.

The results were the same as the previous domain. What could I be doing wrong?

I am assuming this site is in a subfolder of blog since you have blog as part of the permalink.
Try adding a slash at the end of the permalink as such.

/blog/%postname%/

tried that and it (wordpress) kept removing the trailing slash.
then i tried remove the /blog/ portion and it worked! Thanks for your help.
