This is what I was after, thanks.
within this though, how can I set the center column to say 750px wide, so that text doesn't go on forever on wide screens?

The center column is set dynamically. It's the width of the page minus the width of the sidebars

Yes, I thought that and I considered adding a 'blank' right sidebar. However, if I were to do that at say, 200px wide, my site would be ok on a small screen / low res but still too wide high res / big screen. Is there no way of capping the center column at 800px for example?

Ok say you want to cap the center area at 800 and you have two sidebars that are 200 each. So the max page size you want to allow is (200 x 2) + 800 = 1200. Go to ato->style & configure layout-> layout MAX width and set it to 1200

Yes, sorry I should have said, my site is left aligned on the page, so doing this on a small monitor probably wouldn't work?

Define small monitor. Are you talking about an iPhone and such? I view sites all the time on my iTouch
Remember it's both the screen size and the browser window size that effects what is seen

I think I explained it badly. I have an active left sidebar and main column. The whole site is left aligned. I'd like the site width [total] to be a maximum of 1000px. If I set the width to a maximum the left align breaks.

why do you have a right sidebar on Caferoyal when you are not using it? Why not just get rid of it?

I added the sidebar to stop the text running right to the edge of the screen, that's what I was trying to explain earlier. My screen is 17" MBP high res, so 'wider' than average I guess. However, I need the center column text to b no wider than 800px as a block, so the sidebar helps with that. I forgot to upgrade, I have with the other site.

So why not set your page width at , say 80%. that would you give ten percent of the page as a margin on both sides. Or you coulees add a margin on the right to force the info to the left.

I couldn't work out how to add a margin to the right so used a blank sidebar to push it all left!

Well set the site to a fixed width of 800px.
P.S. I have dual 23" screens so the site looks tiny

setting the width to anything other than 100% centers it though and I'd like it left aligned.

I'm still trying to get this.
Several goes, this is what happens:
Layout=100% will left align the whole site, but on any screen the text trails all the way to the right instead of displaying as a block, say 600px wide [main column].
div#wrapper {margin-left: 0;} does nothing it seems
I need to left align the whole site [so the left sidebar is on the left of the screen] but keep the site a max of 1100px wide,
any suggestions?
edit -- this link http://www.caferoyalbooks.com/information shows a page, left aligned at 100% width. The text goes forever. I need a way of limiting the text to say 600 px.
