I'm sorry to see that Atahualpa is no longer being updated. It seems unfair that WordPress should insist on a costly rewriting of the theme just to make it work with their customizer (the theme's own settings section works fine), so I understand the developers' position. However, I'm worried about continuing to rely on a theme that may break with with a future WP update. Is there nothing that can be done? The theme has huge user base. Could we not crowdfund the production of a new version, meeting WP's standards?
If that's not possible, does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement theme with similar features? It's the customizability that makes Atahualpa so special.

Atahualpa is still being updated, it is just not being supported on WordPress because - as you noted - it doesn't support the customizer. I'm still monitoring the forums for any issues that come up, and will try to fix them, but as I've pointed out rewritting it to meet WordPresses 'standards' is something that is just that I don't see happening.
The only way I see is if Flynn wanted to make it a paid theme and pull it from WP but that is his decision, not mine.

Thanks for your reply. Apologies if I misrepresented the situation. Since there had been no updates for some time, I thought you had (understandably, given WP's attitude) decided to let the theme die a natural death. I'm glad to hear that you're still updating it, and I wish WP would take a more sensible attitude. If were to produce a paid version, I suspect there'd be a lot of uptake. I certainly like to keep using it. All best.

I'm having an issue now with the blog - I have two images showing for each article.
You can see the behavior here: http://j-ouellette.com/blog/
Is there a workaround for this please?
Thank you, and it breaks my heart that this theme is no longer supported

It looks like you have set a featured image andhave inserted the image at the start of the post AND in ATO->Configure EXCERPTS->'Don't strip these tags' you have added <img>.
So what I suspect is happening is you are getting the featured image and the image from the post. You have two options, remove the <img> from the 'Don't strip these tags' option OR remove the featured image from the post.
p.s. who said the theme is not supported

That's a leading question
Yes, Atahualpa runs with 5.3.2 I have several sites using it. Might there be a conflict with some plugin along the way? Possibly but there is no way to tell until someone runs into an issue.
If you do hit an issue with Atahualpa, I'll take a look, but it isn't being updated and if a WordPress upgrade comes along with another radical change and it causes Atahualpa to fail, that will be it

I miss Atahualpa theme so much! I just purchased Divi. Wish I hadn't. I switched to Frontier when Atahualpa was discontinued, which was the closest to your theme I could find.
Now the developer is AWOL.
I will GLADLY jump on the bandwagon of crowdfunding or paid version (yearly payment) to have Atahualpa back.
I'm tired of trying to find a replacement when nothing else compares.

I'm in denial that Atahualpa is gone. I still have it installed on Wordpress site that I don't allow to get updated (yet).
And I installed it today on a new site and it still works. But, I don't know for how long.
I spent $249 on the lifetime Divi theme but they have a refund policy. I don't like the theme and they are going to refund my money. Will $249 be enough to give to you guys to get started?
Maybe you can do a poll to see how many of your base supporters are left and willing to chip in towards that $6,000. Or maybe you guys are just tired of all us commenting that we want the themes back, and we should just go away? LOL

hardworker1970 - no it is not being developed anymore due to changes the WP theme reviewers dictated a couple years ago - i.e. the customizer.
Kudzu - while that might have been a good idea four years ago I personally think Flynn should have taken the theme private and sold it, but that take a lot of effort and time that I guess he just decided wasn't worth it. Personally I think some members of the theme review team were scared of Atahualpa and were doing everyting they could to destroy it.

There is no other theme like it. I got my Divi refund yesterday. I will give them credit for their no questions asked policy within 30 days. They mean that.
I don't understand why the theme review team has a say in the fate of Atahualpa. Not all themes available on the Internet are available through the Wordpress theme section are they? What about independent theme builders?
Or do they hold back code that is needed and will only provide their code to those they let in?
Is the option to update the themes still on the table or should I just let go and move on?

in order to get listed in the wordpress.org tyhemes list, you have to meet their guidelines. The problem came about because 'they' decided all themes should have the same look and feel in the backend. That is where the 'customizer' came from. After trying to get developers to use the customizer for a couple years and lots of devlopers resisting, the wordpress theme review team declared that if you didn't use it, your theme would not be approved.
Sqapping to the 'customizer' whould have ben a complete rewrite of Atahualpa (and Montezuma) and by that time Flynn (the theme developer and owner) had moved on from trying to make a living off of Atahualpa, Montezuma and thermeframe bcause he wasn't making a living off them.
My wild guess is that it would take at least 200-400 hours of work to rewrite the theme - those are unpaid hour - to update the theme so people could use it for free. The math doesn't work for me, would it for you?
As for Atahualpa's continued life, it still works and I havn't seen any issues that stop it currently and if a problem crops up, I'll take a look at it, but I have to be honest, I only check the forum maybe once a week because there is little to no activity.
Yes it could be taken from Wordpress.org and sold separately but that is an endeavor that Flynn would have to take and since he hasn't in three years, I don't see it as an option.
Hope that explains it for you.

This explains everything now! I can't count how many themes I've installed and uninstalled looking for a customization panel like Atahualpa, only to discover EVERY control panel looks the same. Now I get it. No wonder all the themes function alike.
Frontier had a similar set up like Atahualpa, but the theme is gone from Wordpress, so now I understand. The theme must have been rejected because it had its own customization panel.
Basically, Wordpress has taken away creativity from all the developers. I don't know if that was done to control everyone out a dictatorship type leadership...or if it was just to overwhelming to push out updates for Wordpress with so many different themes that required certain code by Wordpress.
I'll be honest...if Flynn re-writes the code for Atahualpa to work the way Wordpress wants it to work, then I don't want Atahualpa. It will end up looking like all the other control panels, and it's the incredible control panel that set Atahualpa apart from all the others.
As for working the numbers, Flynn shouldn't have been giving out the theme in the first place. He should have a light version and a paid version.
According to the Wordpress theme section, there are 10,000+ instances of Atahualpa still being used. If Flynn were to charge $60 / year for the theme, that's a huge chunk of change even if only half of them got the paid version. How does THAT math work for Flynn?
If only 10% would have paid: That's $60,000 per year income.
Maybe Flynn should do the math and get back here!

I have WP screaming at me to upgrade to PHP 7.0. I assume that your theme will be broken if I do this upgrade. Is this true? I have been using your theme for a number of years and do not want to change. Your advice please?
