I apologize in advance if this has been addressed before, I did do several searches and found threads that applied, but alas, they didn't solve my problem. I don't have the outer left column on my index page, but do on the secondary pages and that is where the mysterious vertical space followed by a horizontal line occurs.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

did you add a widget area to the header?
are you displaying it on all pages?

Not in the header, but in the index page. The slider is not displayed on the secondary pages, but is a widget inserted in the main template.

Have you used a code examiner like FireBug to look at the area in question?

Thanks so much for your suggestions, Juggledad. I just ran firebug and I couldn't find anything that could be causing this gap and horizontal line. It is just so weird. I may have played with the WordPress css files on this site, so I'm uploading the original files now, replacing anything I might have screwed up.
Any other ideas if this doesn't work?

There are 14 custom widget areas:
Right Sidebar
Left Inner Sidebar
Right Inner Sidebar
"logo (this isn't being used. I can't seem to delete it, perhaps because of the " in front of the name)
"right_side_header (This isn't being used either, same as above)
Slider
social_media
right_of_slider
support_title
adopt_title
volunteer_title
support_content
adopt_content
volunteer_content
featured_pets
happy_tales

try this, put a text widget into every widget area with the name of the widget area in the text and see what you see.

Well, some of the text boxes showed up, but I installed a plug in that allows me to choose which pages the elements in widget area show up on and the text boxes showed up on the secondary pages if I didn't restrict them, but weren't there if I did.

Thanks for your help, JuggleDad. I appreciate your efforts, but I've decided to scrap the whole thing and start over.
