I'm new to wordpress and would like to add a widget to the centre column of my website which adds the 10 latest posts in the events category plus a thumbnail photo
(I've tried looking in the theme options but don't totally understand the php)
Pls could someone help with the coding

you are on an old release of atahualpa the current release is 3.7.8. Because of WordPress requirements, you will have to edit index.php and put the new widget area code just above the loop (line 15)

Is there an easier option if i upgrade to the latest version?

You could just use a plugin like TPG Get Posts that allows you to put a shortcode on a page that displays posts.
