what version of Atahualpa and WP?
have you played with the 'ato->Style WIDGETS' options?

One way I have gotten a full width title background is to use a background image for the widget container.

Another way which is probably "friendlier" is to add something like the following in the Widget Title Box in the theme options and change to your specifications.
