Background colour un header

I have a left aligned background image

how do I give the header area a background colour so the area fills with colour in parts where the image is no there eg http://www.forcem.co.uk

I've bluffed it on the new site by making a 1200 px wide 50% opacity overlay but it's not quite what I'm looking for
