I was trying to add a link at the bottom of the footer for the home page %author-url% and when I removed it I must of took that % away too.

Just that little symbol, did that, I would never off found it.

What coding should I start reading up on, any books to but or websites ?

the front page loads 1.5MB of data. if you use FireBug and select the 'Net' tab and enable it, you will see all the stuff that is loading.
